Redevelopment of Welfare Park Car Park and Walkway

Introduction

The Welfare Park project aimed to enhance public accessibility and safety through the excavation and reconstruction of a car park and walkway. With new kerbs, a northern footway, and stone-ready foundations for tarmac installation, the project prioritized both functionality and community usability. This redevelopment aligns with Welfare Park’s goals to provide secure, long-lasting infrastructure for all visitors.

Project Overview

At Welfare Park, an existing car park and walkway were excavated and replaced to create a safer, more durable space for community use. The project included the installation of new kerbs around the entire car park perimeter, a northern footway, and foundational stoning to prepare for a seamless tarmac application that would integrate smoothly with the park’s current tarmac road and parking areas.

Challenge/Problem Statement

The project required careful excavation and installation while minimizing disruptions to the surrounding community spaces. Key challenges included removing and replacing infrastructure within a limited timeframe and ensuring all new elements—kerbs, footways, and stoning layers—would provide a safe and lasting solution.

Solution

To meet these challenges, the following steps were taken:

  • Efficient Excavation: The old car park and walkway were efficiently excavated and cleared, allowing for a clean slate.
  • Strategic Kerb and Edging Installation: Kerbs were installed along the car park perimeter and walkway, creating defined, stable boundaries that align with the existing infrastructure.
  • Foundation Preparation for Tarmac: The car park and walkway were stoned up, providing a solid foundation to support a durable tarmac layer that will seamlessly connect with the existing roadways.

Implementation

The Welfare Park project followed a phased approach to maximize efficiency and safety:

  1. Excavation and Site Clearance: Removing the existing car park and walkway.
  2. Perimeter and Walkway Kerb Installation: New kerbs were strategically placed to ensure durability and easy navigation.
  3. Northern Footway Addition: The footway was developed along the car park’s north side, enhancing access for pedestrians.
  4. Preparation for Tarmac: The stone layer was applied, ensuring a stable base for the final tarmac application.

Results and Outcomes

The redevelopment of Welfare Park’s car park and walkway has provided a robust, safe, and accessible space for public use. With a solid foundation in place, the area is prepared for a high-quality tarmac surface that will support increased visitor traffic. This project underscores our commitment to delivering sustainable, community-centered infrastructure improvements.

Key Learnings

This project reinforced the value of strategic material selection and thoughtful planning, especially when working within public areas. The use of a phased approach minimized disruption while ensuring high standards were maintained, highlighting our expertise in delivering projects that prioritize both safety and community access.

Conclusion

The Welfare Park car park and walkway redevelopment exemplifies our approach to creating efficient, long-lasting public spaces. Through careful planning, skilled execution, and a focus on public benefit, this project has transformed the park’s infrastructure, ensuring it meets the needs of the community for years to come.
