Bramley Bus Station Upgrade

Project Overview

Bramley Bus Station needed work. The bus stops were dated, the layout wasn’t working as well as it should, and there was an opportunity to add a proper bus lane to improve how vehicles moved through the site. Leeds City Council brought Civcon in to sort it — a six-month job that covered everything from earthworks and drainage to surfacing, kerbing, lighting, and landscaping.

The Challenge

The station couldn’t close. Buses were running throughout the project, which meant the work had to be sequenced carefully around live operations. On top of that, the ground conditions weren’t straightforward — the design had to account for what was actually there, not just what looked good on a drawing.

What We Did

The new bus lane was formed by excavating the grassed area alongside the existing station. It sounds simple, but that excavation also meant relocating underground services that were in the way, installing new drainage, and making sure the finished surface tied in properly with what was already there.

The bus stops were repositioned and rebuilt. New kerbs and paving went in, along with underground wiring and street lighting to improve safety after dark. For the surfacing, recycled asphalt was used throughout — it performs the same job as new material and cuts down on waste.

The whole thing ran over six months, with tasks sequenced to keep disruption to bus services to a minimum.

The Result

Bramley Bus Station came out of the project with a functioning bus lane, rebuilt stops, better lighting, and a layout that works more cleanly for both passengers and operators. The use of recycled asphalt kept the environmental footprint down without compromising on the finish.

It’s a straightforward brief done properly — which is usually what these jobs come down to.
